This
is an easy walk from the Park Street subway?just cut across
Boston Commons. Beautiful place to stroll and gawk. Beacon
Street has incredible old townhomes, one "wow" after another.
One disappointment, however: Our guide book starred Acorn
Street and called it a "gem." We saw it and sort of felt,
"huh?" Compared to other Beacon Hill streets, Acorn Street had
smaller, blander homes and one side was the backside with
fences of homes on the next street. Granted, it had
cobblestones, but that was it. Louisburg Square (where Alcott
and others lived) was much more beautiful.
Enjoy the
walk...

This
is one of the most quaint and beautiful neighborhoods I have
ever seen. We stumbled upon this by accident when driving
around Boston. Luckily, we were able to snag a parking spot
right in the area. There is not much public parking available
in this neighborhood, so take a train or shuttle here if
possible. I felt like I was in a different world. The people
here were friendly and helpful. Most people that live in the
area walk or bike to work. There are numerous shops and
restaurants in the neighborhood if you want to do more than
sight-see. Cheers (the bar) is also on the outskirts of the
residential area. I would definitely come back here
again.

Visitors
from the western parts of the U.S. who want to experience a
residential neighborhood very different from what they're
familiar with at home should make a point of touring Beacon
Hill. (The North End and the Back Bay are a couple of other
Boston neighborhoods that you ought to see as well.) The look
of the area is so different that you'll almost feel as if
you've gone to another country. Narrow streets, one----I
forget the name----still paved with cobblestones, are the norm
here, along with densely built blocks of red-brick apartments
and townhouses. The neighborhood is supposedly very affluent,
although a few of the streets I walked were lined with
apartment buildings that almost had a tenement-like look to
them. I can recall seeing a sign written by a building
maintenance man that scolded the residents for storing their
trash in an alcove, because the building had a rat problem.
Unfortunately, there's no way to see the interiors of any of
the reidential buildings on Beacon Hill (that I'm aware of).
But there is a townhouse museum in the Back Bay that allows
visitors to take a tour. (I didn't actually do this and I'm
kicking myself now for not checking the place out.)
